‘We first started with a research investigation about what we need to do in order to decarbonise the energy system in the Port of Rotterdam, and also further on in the other places where we deliver the energy to, and we saw that basically hydrogen wasn’t very significant part of that, so it was a lonely road to start with, but it’s not lonely anymore – as you can see from this conference.’
‘Rotterdam will be a hydrogen hub, today is it already a hydrogen hub or an energy hub for Europe at the moment and with hydrogen we will be that also in the future. We need 20 million tonnes by 2050 – and that’s a lot of hydrogen, so we need all the collaborations that we can find… We want to decarbonise our system in a very short timeframe. So hydrogen is there already, but we want to produce it in a different way, so we need to scale the technology, we need to get regulation in place, we need to get the scale up on everything that we need to reach these volumes. And that means that in the whole value chain, we have to implement innovation on a large scale and that’s a challenge – but it’s a very nice challenge.’
‘I think this is the biggest in the world, all of the countries and all of the collaborations that we have are here today. We started this actually a couple of years ago with the Sustainable Energy Council saying ‘you have to go to Rotterdam – we are the hydrogen hub’ and while seeing so many people now and also the environment that is created here is so great that I’m already looking forward to next year again.’
