We’re delighted to welcome Vattenfall as an Exhibitor at World Hydrogen 2024. We spoke with them and they gave us an overview of the company, shared their biggest achievements and what they’re looking forward to at the event. Meet with them at Stand C154!
Tell us how your company started & evolved into what it is today?
Vattenfall is one of Europe’s leading integrated energy companies. For more than 100 years we have electrified industries, supplied energy to people’s homes and modernised our way of living through innovation and cooperation. Across all areas of our diversified portfolio, we are working for fossil freedom. We are committed to building a future where everyone can choose fossil-free ways to move, make, and live.
Our Wind business area is a cornerstone to Vattenfall’s overall strategy of reaching fossil freedom with the power of renewables. We are a key player in the European wind industry with approximately 6 GW of wind energy in operation. Our core markets across Northwestern Europe have been founder countries of offshore wind and belong to the most mature markets today, allowing for proven allocation frameworks and swift site development.
Fossil-free hydrogen will play a crucial role in the decarbonization of the energy system in Europe’s path towards net-zero. Today, leveraging our valuable setup as an integrated utility, strong industry track-record, expertise and understanding of the market, and long-standing partnerships, Vattenfall is ideally positioned to build end-to-end value chains with hydrogen playing a key role.
What is your company’s biggest achievement?
Vattenfall is driving the development of hydrogen applications as a pioneer in several projects. One such project is HYBRIT (Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology) – a collaboration between steel producer SSAB, mining company LKAB, and Vattenfall. This joint initiative started in 2016 and focuses on producing steel using hydrogen rather than coal. The aim is to decarbonise the steel industry by replacing the coking coal (traditionally used in steel production to convert iron ore to iron) with hydrogen made from fossil-free electricity (primarily wind power) and water. In July 2021, SSAB Oxelösund rolled the first steel produced using HYBRIT technology, i.e., reduced by 100% fossil-free hydrogen instead of coal and coke, with good results. And in 2022, SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall inaugurated HYBRIT’s pilot facility for fossil-free hydrogen gas storage at Svartöberget in Luleå, Sweden.
Other Vattenfall projects and key collaborations include a partnership with the refinery and fuel company, Preem with the purpose of using fossil-free hydrogen for large-scale biofuel production and a partnership with energy group, St1 to conduct a feasibility study with the ambition to develop a fossil-free value chain for production of electro fuel through offshore wind. In the partnership, Vattenfall aims to develop an offshore wind power-based hydrogen supply infrastructure on the west coast of Sweden.
Today, Vattenfall BA Wind is actively working to develop innovative solutions to decarbonise industries across the communities we operate in Europe as well our own operations. As one of the leading producers of electricity from fossil-free energy sources, especially from offshore wind, we are able to supply large quantities of fossil-free electricity for the production of hydrogen. We see a compelling business case between hydrogen production and our power generation.
What makes your company stand out in the hydrogen/energy industry?
In an emerging hydrogen market, the de-risking and offtake of projects and development of technology on an industrial scale will be key. Vattenfall stands out because of our strong, longstanding partnerships, local industry knowledge, trust with local authorities, and competencies in complex project management that we have from being pioneers in the energy market. At Vattenfall we are perfectly positioned to leverage our experience, such as the work we’re doing in Sweden, to play a strong role by connecting and facilitating all necessary players and levers along end-to-end hydrogen value chains.
What are you most looking forward to at World Hydrogen 2024 Summit & Exhibition?
At the World Hydrogen 2024 Summit, we look forward to participating in a panel discussion on Partnerships with the industry to Enable the Hydrogen Economy. Vattenfall will also deliver a technical presentation on hydrogen production. At our booth, we look forward to having meetings with industry stakeholders to discuss synergies and partnership opportunities across the hydrogen value chain to leverage our position as an integrated company and enable cost efficiencies. We welcome business meeting opportunities to explore collaborative offshore and onshore hydrogen projects.
