The official hydrogen event in Rotterdam spoke to the world’s hydrogen and energy leaders about the future outlook for the hydrogen industry, including the CEO of The Port of Rotterdam, Allard Castelein.
What message did you share with the audience?
Yeah. So, the key message was that Europe has a fantastic opportunity now to both decarbonize and create energy security. Rotterdam as a port should be and can be a major import hub delivering some 25% of the target of 2030 Europe has set with regards to 20-million-ton green Hydrogen production and import need. Rotterdam Can deliver 4.6 million tons from that, and we’re keen to collaborate with key partners to ensure that we move from projects and ideas to confirm production and imports.
Why is Rotterdam so uniquely positioned to form a hub of Hydrogen?
Rotterdam is uniquely positioned because we have first of all world class companies in the port area and we have world class infrastructure connecting the port to other industrial clusters and countries. The World Economic Forum for six years consecutively have confirmed that the infrastructure related to the Port of Rotterdam is the best in the world and that connection allows us then also to deliver the new energy sources via those infrastructures, as well as building new infrastructure.
Why is this a unique event?
Well, the uniqueness of the events, sits with the mere fact that many areas, countries, businesses, governments are considering getting involved in the hydrogen economy. And this provides us with an opportunity to connect the various dots, because it’s inconceivable that one could do this alone. So, we need to collaborate, and we need now to move to firm projects, confirmed off-take, confirmed demands, confirmed supply, confirmed infrastructure, confirmed legislation, regulation, certification and I think this is a summit that could set us on the right path.
What are you enjoying most about the event?
Well, it’s great to be able to see folk again, to engage, to have one-on-one meetings, to have informal reflections, contemplations and build upon each other’s ideas and intentions and get to know each other better with the same target and goal to make a difference.
