Christian Maaß (born in 1972) studied law in Hamburg and Geneva (1992-1998). He subsequently worked as an academic assistant at the environmental law research department of the University of Hamburg and did his legal training there. From 2001 to 2008, he was a Member of the Hamburg Parliament, serving as deputy parliamentary group leader (of Alliance 90/The Greens) before being appointed as the State Councillor of the State Ministry for Urban Development and the Environment (2008-2010). In this capacity, he founded the Hamburg Energie utility and chaired the supervisory boards of various public companies. In 2012, he was a co-founder of the Hamburg Institut research and consultancy company, and he helped to run this until 2022. Since 10 January 2022, Christian Maaß has served as Director-General responsible for heat, hydrogen and efficiency in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
